Big Oso Salsa is a family-owned, small-batch salsa company based in Big Bear Lake, California. The brand takes its name from a playful combination of English and Spanish—Big Oso, or Big Bear—connecting the product to its place of origin.
I developed a visual identity that reflects the company's personality, its handmade approach, and the character of the surrounding region. At the center is Oso, a grizzly bear mascot representing a fierce scoop of salsa. The illustration balances humor and intensity, giving the brand a recognizable character that can extend across packaging and promotional materials.
The supporting visual language draws inspiration from the region's Spanish Colonial architecture, incorporating ornamental linework, expressive typography, and a warm, earthy color palette. Together, these elements create a cohesive identity that feels playful, distinctive, and rooted in place.
The creative direction was guided by three ideas: playfulness, melodrama, and connection to the land. The result is a flexible brand system that brings personality to a small-batch product while remaining grounded in the people and place behind it.
